Tuchel: Chelsea signed the “new Azpilicueta” in Cucurella

Chelsea have signed ‘new Cesar Azpilicueta’ in Marc Cucurella, according to Blues coach Thomas Tuchel.

Spain defender Cucurella became the club’s fifth signing in a busy and often chaotic summer transfer window on Friday, signing a six-year contract after joining from Brighton for a hefty fee of £62.5m.

Cucurella’s arrival coincided with a new contract for compatriot Cesar Azpilicueta, as the long-term Chelsea captain signed an improved two-year contract until 2024 on Thursday, ending Barcelona’s long-running quest to sign him in the process.

There are many similarities between the players other than their nationality, primarily versatility and the ability to work in multiple defensive positions make them valuable options for Tuchel, who lost the services of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger on free transfers earlier this time. Summer then signed Kalidou Koulibaly, with another central defender on the agenda amid talks about Leicester’s Wesley Fofana.

“I’m very excited about what he can bring,” the manager said of the arrival of Cucurella, who could quickly make his Chelsea debut in the Premier League’s opening game against Frank Lampard’s Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday night. “He’s a great player, a great guy.
