Steve Helstrip aka The Thrillseekers has been producing music for over 17 years. His tracks Synaesthesia, By Your Side, The Last Time have been genre defining hits. He’s finally ready with his debut album – Escape which will be available on FSOE. You can pre-order the album here – FSOE.com/Escape
Talk us through the journey you experienced while making “Escape”.
Each track was a journey in itself, in all honesty. For me, music has always been a way to communicate or express my feelings and thoughts, and these tracks represent something that was going on in my life at the time. Now, when I listen to the completed album, it’s like listening back through a music journal. I’ve learned so much about myself, widened my musical boundaries, and hopefully created something that brings something meaningful to the listener.
Steve, you have been releasing music since 1999, unlike other artists your debut album took 17 years. Is there any particular reason for this?
I’ve always wanted to make an album, but found it hard to keep up a singles release schedule and keep back enough tracks back for my album. Over the years I’ve also run a record label, DJ agency and management company. But have recently decided to focus my attention on what I do best, which is make music. So, that’s the reason it has taken so long. But we’re finally here, and I couldn’t be happier with the result.
How was it working with two of your favourite vocalists – Shannon Hurley and Stine Grove?
Amazing, really. Both are incredibly professional, easy to work with and strive for perfection in the same way that I do. I’m very proud of the tracks that we have made together.
What does “Escape” have in store for trance listeners?
I think Escape will resonate with anyone who loves trance. It’s not all about trance per se, but the feelings and emotions conveyed within it are very much on the same level. And of course, for the down tempo tracks, there will be club mixes to follow.
What is in store for your label “Adjusted Music” in 2017?
I have no plans to develop Adjusted Music, as I want to focus all my efforts into producing more music. Running a label is a full time job in itself, so I’m happy to have FSOE handle that side of things for me now.
You are a man of several aliases, but which one is the closest to your heart?
Thrillseekers, for sure!
Steve, trance as a genre has gone through several changes. According to you, how can an artist stay relevant to these changes today?
For me personally, I don’t follow trends or take too much notice of what other people are doing. I just follow my heart and make the emotional club music that I love and would want to listen to myself. I’ve always approached making music that way, and most probably always will.
FSOE currently is one of the strongest trance labels. What do you think has been the secret for its constant success?
Consistency and passion for the music and the scene.
Does Synaesthesia still give Steve Helstrip the listener goosebumps?
I only tend to get goosebumps when I see the reaction that the tracks gets when I play it in my sets. I rarely listen to my own music once it’s finished, except for when I play it in the clubs.
In your free time do you listen to other genres, if yes who would be your favourite artist?
Oh I have many. I love Schiller, Keane, Cold Play, Guy J, the list goes on and on.
Any plans of an “Escape” tour to India?
I would love to come back to India to tour Escape, and it’s something we’ll be working on. So, watch this space!
