London – Archie and Lilipet, sons of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, become prince and princess after The death of Queen Elizabeth II. When they were born, the two children were too far from the line of succession to be awarded those titles under the rules established by King George V in 1917.

Archie was given the title Earl of Dumbarton when he was born. He would have taken the title of Lord, but his parents chose for him to be called Lord Archie instead, according to Buckingham Palace.

It is possible for King Charles III, the new monarch, to change the rules set by his predecessor to take His Royal Highness (His Royal Highness) – the titles of Prince and Princess – away from his grandchildren, but veteran royal reporter and CBS News contributor Roya Neke said it is not likely to do so.

The titles of other members of the royal family were also changed after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Apparently Charles became King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. He will go to “His Majesty” instead of “His Royal Highness”.

Camilla, the wife of King Charles, became the queen consort. She will be referred to as “Her Majesty” rather than “Her Royal Highness”. A royal consort is different from a ruling queen, such as Queen Elizabeth II, for example, who rules in her own right.

Prince William, formerly known as the Duke of Cambridge, is now Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge, inheriting the additional title from his father. As the Duke of Cornwall, he is entitled to millions of dollars annually which represents the net surplus from the estate of the Duchy of Cornwall that his father owned.

During King Charles’ first address to the nation, he said he bestowed the title of Prince of Wales – traditionally given to the heir to the throne – to William. This address is not transferred automatically.

Kate, formerly the Duchess of Cambridge, is now the Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, inheriting the title from Camilla. When William became Prince of Wales, Kate became Princess of Wales, a title that William’s mother, Princess Diana, last held. Camilla was also technically Princess of Wales before the Queen’s death, but she never used the title due to her association with Princess Diana.

William and Kate’s children, George, Charlotte and Louis, became lords and princesses of Cornwall and Cambridge, like their parents. When William becomes Prince of Wales, their surnames will change to “Wales” as well.
