LAS CRUCES — A University of New Mexico student and New Mexico State student-athlete recovering from gunshot wounds has died following an incident on the university’s campus early Saturday morning, postponing a highly anticipated basketball game between rival schools that was scheduled To take it place later that day.

On Sunday, more than 24 hours after the shooting, there were still more questions than answers. Here’s a look at what we know.

The New Mexico State Police is leading the investigation into the fatal shooting incident on the university’s campus. Although the police issued a statement on Saturday afternoon indicating that a person had died in the shooting, relevant police records have not yet been made available.

In the statement, police said there was an altercation between a 19-year-old man and a 21-year-old man around 3 a.m. Saturday on campus. Both men had gunshot wounds.

The 19-year-old, who was later identified as a UNM student, was announced dead at the scene. It has not been released under his name.

21-year-old, who was Sun News NMSU basketball forward Mike Beck confirmed that he was taken to an Albuquerque hospital after the shooting.

UNM students who spoke to Sun News On Saturday evening, they said they heard the gunfire around 3:15 a.m. to 3:20 a.m. near the back entrance to the Coronado Hall housing complex on campus. The students said that the police arrived within 5 to 10 minutes.

The Albuquerque Journal mentioned Later on Saturday, he said the walls of the hall “appeared to be riddled with several bullet holes, and at least one window appeared to have been hit.”

As of late Sunday morning, no one had been charged in the shooting, though police said an investigation was under way.

Beck, 21, is the starting powerhouse for the basketball team.

A native of Chicago, Beck spent most of his high school years playing for Kansas. The 6-foot-7, 218-pound forward played at Georgia and Austin Peay before coming to NMSU for the 2021-22 season.

Beck is one of two returning players in this year’s Aggie Hope squad. In the team’s first two games, he averaged 9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2 blocks in just over 20 minutes.
