“We’re been here before; we ‘ve seen the movie. … what was once unstoppable, is being prevented today.
Last week, the city saw more than 1,000 new Govt-19 cases, Condrell said. The daily case average also rose to 272, up from 104 last week, he said.
“This is a very dangerous number,” he said. “Our babies are dying. From two weeks to two to four years old. You can’t make up for it. Our babies are dying.”
The mayor’s mask order will take effect immediately and will apply to indoor systems and large outdoor gatherings. The mayor must vaccinate all city employees.
Condrell said more than 71% of New Orleans city employees are vaccinated, but that is not enough.
“You really need that mask, period – even if you’ve been vaccinated, of course, if you haven’t been vaccinated,” he said.
According to EMS, Cantrell said, “We do not currently have the capability to answer 911 calls from our community.”
The increase in lawsuits has prompted Louisiana Governor John Bell Edwards to seriously consider the mask order.
“The Delta variant is a game changer, and at this point, it’s not whether we get vaccinated or wear a mask, we have to do both,” Edwards told a news conference Friday.
“Right now at least 83.7% of all govt cases in our region are the result of the delta type, so anyone in Louisiana who is cow positive should consider that it comes from the delta type, regardless of the precautions you should take in the end,” he said.
This variation is spreading across the country, health officials warn. According to Johns Hopkins University data, safety restrictions and mask guidelines are returning as cases have increased by at least 10% in almost every US state over the past week.
This variant spreads faster and easier than the first corona virus strain and can affect fully vaccinated people whose symptoms are usually mild.
With more vaccine numbers lagging behind, children are bearing the brunt of new cases.
“We’ve seen a pretty dramatic increase in the last two weeks,” Dunbar told CNN by phone on Friday. “A large number of children need hospitalization.”
The hospital currently treats seven Govt-19 patients, but Dunbar estimates that eight to 12 patients a day will be admitted. According to Dunburn, 50% of patients in the hospital go to the ICU.
Meanwhile, Louisiana’s Cato Parish will have to wear masks on all of its facilities and buildings starting Monday. According to the state Department of Health, 32% of the church’s population is fully vaccinated.
