Mexican cosmopolitan beauty Andrea Mesa crowned her heir at the 70th Miss Universe event in Eilat, Israel on Sunday night.
In the international competition hosted by Steve Harvey, 80 contestants competed for the turban. But it went to the final three – Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane, Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira and Sandu’s Miss India.
Miss South Africa, one of several contestants pressured by her own government to boycott the controversial contest against Israeli treatment of Palestinians, was selected as the second runner-up.

The last Fox broadcast minutes of Sunday saw some amazing live TV moments. Earlier on the show, Harvey mentioned his Miss Universe 2015 defeat, in which he announced the false winner. In 2015, Harvey named Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez the winner, replacing Miss Philippines Pia Alonso Wordspok, who actually won the pageant.
Shortly before the final two of Sunday’s competition, before announcing the winner, Harvey referred to Miss Paraguay as “Miss Portugal”. Quickly corrected the mistake.
“They wrote Portugal in a bad light and they are trying to cast me again,” Harvey said of the show’s producers. “I’m not going to do that this year.”
Earlier in the pageant, Harvey asked Sandu, who was ranked in the top 16 as Miss India, “I hear you impersonate some cute animals. Let’s hear your best one.”
The cat responded with a meow from the alley platform, which turned into instant internet memories, while Harvey received some criticism on Twitter for the question.
Miss USA Elle Smith, 23, a University of Kentucky graduate who works as a broadcast news correspondent for WHAS-TV in Louisville, entered the top 10 on Sunday night. But Smith was denied a place in the top five.
As Miss Kentucky, Smith was crowned Miss USA 2021 Annual competition last month Tulsa, Oklahoma.
