A one-time staffer for former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was killed Sunday after being ordered out of an elevator in Delaware and hit by a car, authorities said.
The man, identified by Cuomo on Twitter as Sid Wolf, and five friends ordered a lift to pick them up in Dewey Beach and take them to Bethany Beach, Delaware State Police said.
“A group was traveling in the same vehicle southbound on Coastal Highway when a disagreement arose between the group and the lift operator,” police said in a statement.
The Lyft driver stopped in the middle of a lane and “demanded all six passengers to exit the vehicle,” police said.
A 2016 Toyota Corolla driven by a 27-year-old man was traveling toward the car when it suddenly stopped and swerved to avoid hitting the elevator, police said. But the driver did not see the people get out of the car and attack the wolf.
The wolf was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Five others were unharmed.
The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene while the Lyft driver fled the scene. The police, who are investigating the incident, are looking for the lift driver.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Lyft said: “We are heartbroken by this incident. Our hearts go out to Mr. Wolff’s loved ones are with us, and we’re here to offer our support.”
“We have permanently removed the driver from the Lyft community and are assisting law enforcement with their investigation,” the statement said.
A condolence To Wolf, the father-of-two said he was “a people magnet, the first person to greet you with a hug.”
“His vitality was unfailing and irresistible. He effortlessly gathered friends and treasured family. To see him with his daughters is to see the epitome of love,” the obituary said.
Cuomo said Wolf “was an exceptional public servant who worked tirelessly for the betterment of all of NY.”
