A singing and dancing squad of toy unicorns pooping could be hot trouble, legally speaking, all because the eye-catching streamers sent the Black Eyed Peas a huge hit.
Let’s explain… A company called MGA Entertainment has created a popular line of toys – dancing unicorns that spew shimmery slime called Poopsie Slime Surprise. Every child’s imagination, right?
In order to market baby products, MGA ran a bunch of ads with animated unicorns singing and dancing to a song called “My Poops” — featuring the catchy hook “My poo, my poo, my poo, my shiny, shiny poo!”
If this sausage looks familiar, that’s because it’s a play on BEP’s classic “My Humps,” which is what prompted a lawsuit. Will.i.am Record label BMG & Co., the music publishing company, owns the majority of the copyright to the 2005 smash song, and claims “My Poops” rips through melody, percussion, and chord progression, and even features a singer who sounds a lot like Fergie.
BMG says MGA did not obtain the rights to use the song, and now wants at least $10 million in compensation. If that sounds a little high, it’s worth remembering that “My Humps” was a massive hit, garnering over 700 million views on YouTube alone and winning Best Hip-Hop Video at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards.
If BMG ends up winning even a fraction of the $10 million in court, this could be the most expensive prank in history! We’ve reached out to MGA for comment…so far, no word.
The real shocker – since God is our witness, we thought unicorns shit rainbows. 🤷🏽♂️
