The $2.04bn Powerball jackpot has won the largest lottery prize in history.

The announcement ended a frenzy across the United States as people from states that do not participate in the Powerball lottery flocked to buy tickets for the historic jackpot.
Officials have not identified the newly minted billionaire winner, which is almost $400m bigger than the previous record jackpot. Officials added that a Joe’s service center in Altadena, California, about five miles (eight kilometers) north of Pasadena, sold the winning ticket.
Only four previous Powerball jackpots have reached $1bn. No one came close to Tuesday’s prize, which started at $20m on August 6 – and now it’s back to $20m for the next drawing on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s jackpot winner can choose to receive Full gift paid by annuity over 29 years or lump sum paid immediately. Winners often choose the lump sum, which is $997.6m for Tuesday’s jackpot.
All winnings are subject to federal taxes, reducing payouts by more than one-third, and many states additionally tax lottery winnings.

The Powerball draw, which was released on Tuesday, was delayed from Monday due to problems processing participating lottery ticket sales. Officials have not disclosed which lotteries are participating, citing a policy against doing so. Winning numbers are 10-33-41-47-56, and Powerball is 10.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. According to the California Lottery, the security requirements are “All 48 must meet [participating] Lotteries before a drawing occurs”.

The record-breaking Powerball jackpot is separate from the $1.334bn Mega Millions lottery prize claimed in September.
