Apple store car crash: One dead, at least 19 injured after car drives through Massachusetts store

One person was killed and at least 19 others injured when a car plowed through an Apple Store in Hingham, Massachusetts, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said Monday.

Police identified Kevin Bradley, 65, of New Jersey, as dead at the scene, according to a press release from the district attorney’s office. The driver has not been identified at this time, the DA’s office said.

At around 10:45 a.m. the Derby Street shops received a 911 call for help, said District Attorney Tim Cruz. Hingham police and fire crews found several injured people at the Apple store a short time later, Cruz added.

“A dark-colored SUV appears, with a … glass window driving at an undetermined rate of speed and striking several people,” Cruz said.

Hingham Fire Chief Steve Murphy responded during a press conference Monday that “there were several patients injured in the front of the store and in the store, including a few patients who were pinned against a wall by a vehicle.”

Seven fire engines and 14 ambulances are available to treat the injured, Murphy said. The chief minister could not provide updates on the condition of the victims. Officials are not releasing the names of the injured at this time as they work to notify family members, Cruz added.

South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Massachusetts, was treating 17 patients from the crash as of Monday evening, the DA’s office told CNN in an email. Two other injured people were first taken to South Beach and transferred to hospitals in Boston.

Injuries included head injuries and dismembered limbs, said Dr. William Tollefsen, who works on the South Shore.

Tollefsen said he and other first responders used a nearby restaurant during the raid to keep people out of the cold.

Dr. Christopher Burns, South Shore’s head of trauma, said he treats many patients with life-threatening and limb-threatening injuries. Some have undergone surgery and others are still waiting, Burns said Monday afternoon.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston received two patients who are still hospitalized, a hospital spokeswoman said. Boston Medical Center has received three patients who are still hospitalized, a hospital spokeswoman told CNN by phone.

It was unclear whether Brigham and Women’s and Boston Medical Center accounted for the total number of patients transferred to them.

Cruz said the investigation into the car crash is “active” and ongoing.

“Regarding the driver of the motor vehicle, we are probing it. Regarding the condition of the motor vehicle, we are investigating it,” Cruz said. The driver of the vehicle was not taken to the hospital, according to Cruz.

“My understanding is that he hasn’t been taken to the hospital yet,” Cruz said. “He is now, with the police officers.”

When asked how many people may have been inside the Apple store when the car crashed, Cruz noted that it was the beginning of a holiday week.

“Obviously the Apple Store is a very busy place. It’s the Monday of a holiday week,” Cruz said. “So I don’t know exactly how many people were there – I’m sure we’ll find out.”

Hingham is about 20 miles south of Boston.

Apple’s Derby Street location in Hingham is currently closed. According to to its website.

“We apologize for the inconvenience caused while this store is closed,” the website said said. “Until we reopen, use our online services.”

Apple released a statement on Monday saying, “Our hearts go out to our team members and injured customers, and to everyone affected by this terrible incident.”

“We are devastated by today’s traumatic events at Apple Derby Street and the tragic loss of a professional who was supporting the recent construction at the store,” the company’s statement said. “We are doing everything we can to support our team members and customers during this difficult time.”

The Apple Store, with a large glass shop front, is located at the back corner of the high-end Derby Street shops. The store’s entrance faces a large parking lot, which sees hundreds of visitors drive by daily.

The shopping area is especially busy during the holiday season, with the Apple Store and surrounding restaurants and shops getting more crowded this time of year.
