Inspired by the early works of Armin Van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold, Ferry Corsten, and Paul van Dyk, Alexander Popov fell in love with electronic music after dabbling with various genres and styles. It piqued his interest in professional DJing and music production, which got him his first gig at age 17 and led to the release of his first single in 2007. Now he’s ready with his second artist album – Intention
Listen to Alexander Popov – Intention
Hi Alexander, hope everything is great with you! How has 2018 been treating you till date?
This year was probably one of the most productive years for me! I’ve finally released my second album, collaborated with Armin Van Buuren, played some really exciting shows and almost made it in DJ Mag Top100 🙂 #103
You very recently released “Intention”. Congratulations for that! How did the whole idea for the album come about? Can you elaborate a little on it?
Thank you! Idea of the second album comes to me last year and we agreed with my label on ADE 2017 for the new album in 2018 so it took almost whole year for me but I’m really happy with the result.
Speaking of albums, what is your favourite trance album of all time and why? Has it ever influenced you majorly when you sit in the studio over your productions and albums?
I have two favorite trance albums Armin Van Buuren – Mirage and Tiesto – Just Be of course I’ve got influence especially from Armin I’m a big fan of his sound.
2017 was a great year for trance with a lot of artists returning back to the genre, charting releases and a lot more. However in comparison to that, this year hasn’t been that eventful in the trance sphere. Do you ever think we’ll reach a stage where trance as a genre will be stable, without all these fluctuations?
I think trance genre looks well nowadays and it’s pretty stable in comparison with many other genres that sort of quickly pick up and then lose popularity. I feel myself on my own place producing and playing trance music as I’m not getting bored and still feel there is a lot of things that I can do in this genre.
Can we expect to see an album tour in the works soon? Which places would you love to tour with your latest album?
We already have some gigs confirmed and hope will get more soon for the whole tour. I’ve visited around 40 countries with the gigs in my career but haven’t been yet in Japan and New Zealand so those are the places where I really want to go.
What is one thing you like about the genre and one thing you dislike about the it and why?
I love the energy of this music, and it hard to name something that I dislike but maybe it is a fact that somebody associates trance music with the drugs.
Of course, all the tracks in “Intention” are phenomenal. However, Is there any specific track in the album that you are most attached/have the most personal connect to? And why so?
One of my personal favorites on the album is Legacy, this track shows how I feel the beauty of trance music with classical influence.
What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you?
For the rest of the year I’ll release two more singles from the album and already working on the new stuff for the next year.
Any message you would like to send out to your fans?
I just want to say a massive Thank You to all my listeners and fans for the love and kind words that I’m reading in comments and messages, it’s really means a lot for me. Can’t wait to see you all around the world on my shows!
